Sextant, brass, and box, made by Berge, London, England 1800 -1820
Matthew Berge took over from Ramsden after the latter's death in 1800. He ran the workshop until his own death in 1820 when the workshop passed to Worthington.
Used to find longitude at sea by measuring distances of certain stars from moon. Height of star measured by noting the position of alidade when image of star reflected from pivoted to fixed mirror & into telescope; coincides with horizon seen through unsilvered portion of fixed mirror.

Description
Sextant, brass, and box, made by Berge, London, England 1800 - 1820. Brass sextant with silvered vernier scale, signed on central bar. 60 deg arc on bottom with calibrations. Moving alidade carries small mirror at top, bottom moves across scale. One arm has sighting telescope, other has fixed mirror. Signed on central bar "Berge London, late Ramsden", with the opus number "1787".
