Mule, straight one of pair, mens, leather / metal embroidery, maker unknown, India, 1875-1900
Straight, one of a pair, mens mule of turnshoe construction, thonged with pointed wide curled over toe and stacked heel. Mule consists of red leather upper featuring vamp with peaked throat and low sides, folded in back and piped back seam with top edge whip stitched in pink to where the back folds down. Vamp features apron shaped metal embroidery with beetle wings cut in small squares, tongue lined in leather and 3 rows of thonging visible on the insole. Leather sole features 5 thongs round the sides of the top piece, a thonged edge with multi layer external shank and thonged centre. Folded over sole at the toe has triangles cut out underlain with green shagreen and outlined in white stitching.
