Small shoe foundation for bound foot made from wood. It features a wooden heel which extends under the arch and tapers to a square forepart, touching the ground. There are 4 holes pierced in a diamond pattern in the heel and one in the forepart. The forepart is damaged. Remains of fabric and the impression of stitches can also be seen across the top edge.
Made: 1851 - 1900
Marks
Written in black ink on top of the foundation is the symbol, '+' over an inverted 'T'. Underneath is a Joseph Box collection label printed in black text on a paper label. It reads, 'FROM JOSEPH BOX, / MAKER BY SPECIAL APPOINTMENTS TO / H.R.H. THE PRINCESS OF WALES, / H.I.H. THE CROWN PRINCESS OF GERMANY AND / H.R.H. THE PRINCESS LOUIS OF HESS, / REGENT STREET, LONDON. Established 1808'.
Part of the label is missing at the corners. On the upper left hand corner of the label is the number '115' printed in black with the number '63' perpendicular to it.
