Slip on shoe, straight one of pair, boys, silk damask / cotton / leather, maker unknown, China, 1850-1899
Boys straight one of a pair slip on shoe for outdoor wear with forward jutting prow toe over round toe. Shoe consists of faded magenta silk damask uppers, seamed front and back, black top edge binding, decorative toe cap and outside counter. Toe cap and outside counter feature decorative motifs appliqued in polychrome silk embroidery threads worked in chain stitch with butterflies, scrolls, good luck symbols and Chinese characters, edged with blue green braid and gilt on the quarters. Upper lined in cotton, appliqued through at forepart with a cotton sock. Sole is leather stitched round the edge and up the centre and is attached to a cream covered platform.
