Chordephone (disc-operated zither), timber & metal, maker unknown, [Germany], 1895 1936.
Mechanical zither with rectangular wooden frame; edges curved; sits on four wooden legs; inside wood frame is cast metal frame with floral decoration on which is flat wooden soundboard with 44 metal strings secured at one end and passing over metal bridge then through player mechanism. Mechanism comprises rectangular metal section across strings which consists of series of metal plectra/ hammers and five wheels on bar; at other end strings pass over cast metal nuts, staggered in various positions; 44 tuning pins in 4 lines with letter names of notes on each pin; mechanical mechanism under base in metal housing, with brass arm to wind mechanism; two brass lever controls. Uses Polyphon discs.
