Description
Aircraft model, C30 Cierva Autogiro, wood/metal, Eric Noble / John Newton, Australia, 1934-1935
Autogyro, landplane, 'cigar'-shaped fuselage with two open cockpits. Cowled radial engine on nose of fuselage with two bladed propeller. Forward and on either side of the fuselage is the undercarriage with wheels attached to the fuselage by struts.A tailwheel is fitted to the aft fuselage. A three bladed rotor is fitted to the rotor mast above the forward cockpit. A vertical stabiliser is fitted to the rear of the fuselage with a ventral fin beneath. Horizontal stabilisers are fitted on the fuselage sides aft. These have upturned tips.
The fuselage is painted dark blue with a silver 'cheat' line on the sides. The engine cowling (Townend ring), engine nose, rotor blades, horizontal stabilisers and wheel hubs are silver.
The cowled engine was an uncommon feature of the C30 Autogiro appearing only on the prototype MkII(140hp 7 cylinder "Genet Major" engine instead of the 105hp 5 cylinder "Genet Major" engine) , G-ACKA c/n AH1. This prototype was built by Airwork Ltd. at Heston. The model does not represent this aircraft as the undercarriage and passenger entry door on the model are representative of the general production Avro-built autogyros rather than this prototype.
