Lace lengths, Binche lace border (2 pieces), linen, bobbin made, Belgium, early 20th century (OF). Modern Belgium Binche, pillow made (SB).
Continuous lace border with straigh picoted headside
Sloping leaf motif alternates with an expanse of fancy mesh, with a somewhat arbitrary horizontal division.
The two main design areas are outlined in cloth stitch, which has the characteristic open edge, rather like a footing worked within the lace. The leaf motif is filled with half stitch, and elsewhere two different arrangements of the binche spider have been used. The headside passive threads inside the picots include a heavy thread worked double with the normal lace thread, presumably to give strength and weight to the edge. The picots are worked very poorly.
