Ship model, Formosan Catamaran, consisting of raft-like hull of bamboo poles tied together, single sail consists of woven grass fibre on mast with rigging, green oval tub for passengers in centre, 3 bamboo oars & steering oar, China, c. 1880-1890.(OF).
The Formosan caramaran ,known as a "tek-pai" was usually a large raft made of bamboo logs lashed together ,with a slight rail running around the craft. There would often be a tub in the centre of the raft to provide a safe seat for a passenger or passengers. Although apparently rather frail, they could ,and did, stand up to moderately rough weather.
