This basket was acquired by a member of the London Missionary Society, Captain Edward Coode Hore, while in Tanganyika, Central Africa between 1877 and 1888. Hore who was also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society went to Africa to help set up a Christian mission and while there acquired this basket which was used to store warm food.

The basket was originally loaned to the museum through the Royal Geographical Society of Australia in 1897.

This basket was made in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), Central Africa around 1800-1897.

A circular basket with a square woven base. The lower portion of the basket features cross woven natural and dark brown strips of fibre, while the upper body of the basket features a zig zag pattern that has been produced using woven black and natural coloured fibres. The top of the basket is finished with a firm bound rim.
