Object statement
Mean-time regulator clock, used at Sydney Observatory, glass / meta / wood, made by R. Haswell & Sons, London, 1900-1910
This clock was used to keep standard time and was integral to time-keeping system set up at the Sydney Observatory..

Haswell and Son took over the horological tool business of Thomas Hewitt in 1842 and the company exhibited at the Great London Exhibition of 1851. They appear to have been well known merchants of watch and clock tool parts and complete movements which they supplied to others.

This clock is of national significance as it was an integral part of Australia's time keeping system in the mid-twentieth century. It is also of significance for its association with Australia's pioneering astronomers who worked at Sydney Observatory.
