Object statement
Bricks (2), Bega clay, Strathfield and Enfield Brick and Terra Cotta Works, Sydney, Australia, 1910
Stock Book information suggests these bricks were made using Bega clay. Original documentation from the acquisition suggests these bricks, as well as bricks C4923:C4925, were made by the Strathfield and Enfield Brick & Terra Cotta works at the instigation of the curator of the Technological Museum (that is the original form of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences), Mr [Baker]. He in turn instigated this research at the behest of Mr B Gowing, of Bega who sent a quantity of Bega clay (C4921) to the Technological Museum to determine 'whether it would be suitable for making dry pressed bricks.'

Date of manufacture from original Stock Book entry.
Stock Book information indicates these bricks were made using clay from Bega Original documentation from the acquisition suggests these bricks, as well as bricks C4923:C4925, were made by the Strathfield and Enfield Brick & Terra Cotta works at the instigation of the curator of the Technological Museum (that is the original form of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences), Mr [Baker]. He in turn instigated this research at the behest of Mr B Gowing, of Bega who sent a quantity of Bega clay (C4921) to the Technological Museum (in 1909) to determine 'whether it would be suitable for making dry pressed bricks.' It was found that the clay sample from Bega was too porous and not suitable for the dry press process of brickmaking. Mr Gowing sent a further sample in 1910 which appears to have been combined with the clay from Enfield to produce plastic bricks. Mr Gowing was also interested in what class of machinery would be suitable for making bricks with the types of clay he had available. Mr [Baker] was unable to advise on this subject, suggesting Mr Gowing approach individual brick press manufacturers. Mr Gardner, Manager of the Strathfield & Enfield Brick & Terra Cotta works then presented a quantity of the resultant bricks to the Technological Museum in 1910, C4922:C4925.
