Working model of a steam engine with 2 single-acting vertical cylinders, metal, made by 17 year old worker at sugar mill (McAuley and Sons), Chatsworth Island, NSW, Australia, 1881-1882.
The model was built in 1881-1882 by Mr J. Mankey, when he was employed at the sugar mill of John McAuley & Sons, Chatsworth Island, Clarence River, NSW. He started work when he was 17 years old and it took approx 12 months of his spare time. It was built of odds and ends found about the mill, including ridgecap bolts; the flywheel was part of a worn out cornsheller.
