Object statement
Scientific reprint, 'Disarming Flu Viruses' by W Graeme Laver, Norbert Bischofberger and Robert G Webster, Vol 280, No.1, pp78-87 January 1999, paper, published by Scientific American, United States of America, 1999
This document provides clear, easily understood information about a new class of drugs designed to prevent, or reduce the severity of symptoms of, influenza. It explains how influenza pandemics have arisen throughout history and how they are likely to arise again. It also details how, when and by whom the drugs were created. While it is a good example of a scientific reprint it is also a significant public document about humanity's fight against viral disease. It records the scientific research that lead to the development of an important Australian innovation.
This reprint was printed in 1998 by Scientific American Inc. in the United States of America. The information it contains was also published in Scientific American, Volume 280, No 1 in January 1999.
Publishers of scientific magazines make reprints available to authors when their work is published. This allows authors to send copies to other scientists who request them. This one was made by Scientific American and given to Biota Inc which used it for display purposes. Biota then gave the reprint to the Powerhouse Museum, together with a sample of Relenza which contains Zanamivir.
