Object statement
Automobile tail light and name plate, 'Holden', metal / plastic, made by General Motors Holden, Australia, 1948-1953
The Holden 48-215 was not only the first mass produced car made in Australia but also the one on which the future success of the company was built. The beginnings of this iconic Australian car can be traced back to 1926 when the American company of General Motors established a car assembly plant in Australia.

In 1948 the commercial manufacture of the Holden car was begun with the first Holden 48-215 (popularly known as the FX) shown to the public on November the 29th 1948. Holden's domination of the locally built family car market, reflected in the slogan "Australia's Own Car", was checked only after the release in the early 1960s of serious competitors from rival United States based manufacturers Ford (with the Falcon) and Chrysler (with the Valiant).

This itail light and name plate is from one of the Holden 48-215s produced between 1948 and 1953.

Description
Automobile tail light and name plate, 'Holden', metal / plastic, made by General Motors Holden, Australia, 1948-1953

A tail light and name plate for a Holden motor car. The tail light is made up of three sections which have been bolted together. The middle section consists of a rectangular metal surround which holds a rectangular red light with a circular orange light in the centre. Metal panels on either side of this central section taper at one end and have been painted black. The light and the metal surrounds have rounded edges giving the tail light a sleek appearance. Five metal screws on the back of the tail light allow it to be attached to the body of a car. The name plate consists of six metal capital letters that spell the word 'HOLDEN'. Three lines have been engraved across the centre of each of the letters. The letters and the tail light have been attached to a perspex mount.
