Ship's deck anchor windlass, horizontal type, model, [Australia or UK]; A A Stewart Collection (OF). Miniature model of a steam driven, geared ship's windlass.
This model is based on the design of a horizontal deck mounted steam driven anchor windlass developed by Clarke Chapman & Co. and Emerson Walker & Co. both of Gateshead (near Newcastle), England. The design was first intorduced by Emerson Walker prior to 1882. In about the 1930s, both companies adopted a common "standardised" pattern.
