Object statement
Aero engine, "Allison", type V1710-39, 12 cylinder, 1225hp, bore: 5'5", stroke: 6", weight: 1303, s/no 3193 (OF).
Originally fitted to P40 Kittyhawk A29-160 it was removed at 130 hours 20 minutes. It was overhauled, tested and fitted to P40 Kittyhawk A29-52 on 27/7/1943 at 139 hours 25 minutes. Because of bearing failure at 363 hours it was removed on 29/10/1943. After a complete overhaul and testing it was fitted to P40 Kittyhawk A29-39 at 368 hours and 30 minutes on 22/3/1944. On 14/7/45 it was removed because of a lack of compression having run a total of 525 hours and 5 minutes. It was inhibited, stored and subsequently donated to the Museum in 1948.
On 10/2/1944 the engine was allotted to 82 Squadron RAAF at Mildura as a spare and as noted above, was fitted to P40 Kittyhawk A29-39 but the aircraft did not join the Squadron in New Guinea and was allotted to 2 OTU from May 1944 until November 1944 and then to 1 OTU from January 1945 until the engine was removed in July 1945.
