Object statement
Bottle, stoneware, wheel-thrown, sgraffito cut through a dark brown slip, glazed with matt light olive green and brown textured barium glaze, Alan Peascod, Canberra, Australia, 1983 (OF).
Alan Peascod (born 1943, England), trained at East Sydney Technical College from 1964, where the Anglo-Oriental ceramic aesthetic was predominant. He soon became more interested in Islamic forms and processes and went first to the Middle East (Cairo) to research and work, in 1972, followed by other research trips to India, Europe and Spain. He has taught in Australia, UK, Cairo, Madrid and Denmark. He set up the ceramics department at the Canberra School of Art (1973-1984), taught in Glasgow 1984-86, and Wollongong from 1986. He has published widely on his research and completed a doctorate at the University of Wollongong in 1996.
He is well-known in Australia for, and is represented in the collection by his Islamic jar-forms. However, from the early 1990s he has also made several series of ceramic figures: the 'Dead Fish Society' and the 'Ultimate Solution' series 'used satirical ideas to draw attention to the nexus between education and the quality of professional art practice'.
