A94 Hand satchel, gourd-shaped, lacquer / silk, maker unknown, collected by the Rev. Julian Tenison-Woods, Japan, 1886
Description
Gourd shaped container with lacquer finish and red braid carrying cord. The container opens vertically at the centre, by splitting into two halves, with one side edged with a short instepped lid to hold the other piece in place. The container appears to be constructed with a moulded fibre and paper core coated with a layer of salmon-coloured clay/putty. It is decorated with coloured lacquer leaves, delineated in gold hiramakie on the lid and red lacquer leaves on the side, on a silver leaf ground. The carrying cord is of red silk braid, with tassled ends and is attached to the container at the front and back by flower-shaped metal studs. The insides are of shiny black lacquer with the flange painted in gold.
