Date taken from the blue file. Marks on the object date it to 1806, however Port Macquarie had not been founded at this date, so perhaps this is the date Cpt William Grice arrived in NSW (information taken from the blue file).
Engraved walrus tusk, featuring a harbour scene with a whaling barque and smaller sailing boats, moored off-shore, "Sydney Town/ New South Wales Colony" inscribed above. To the right is a schemetized map of NSW coastline, showing Port Macquarie, Point Stephen, Newcastle and Jervy [sic] Bay. To the right again is a 16-point compass and sprays of flowers with "1806/ Cpt William Grice/ New South Wales Corps" inscribed among the flowers. 2 brass rings attached to tooth via plugs provide for hanging.[Date of 1820 based on foundation of Port Macquarie which had not been founded in 1806 - Paul Donnelly from blue file]
