Stamp seal, banded brown onyx, possibly Iran, date unknown
The use of seals originated in Western Asia c 5000 BCE and the earliest form of seals were stamp seals. They were usually made from roughly carved stones, but materials could include faience and terracotta. [See P.F. Donnelly, "Egyptian Amulets in the Powerhouse Museum", 1988].
This is part of a large collection of antiquities, including Egyptian faience figures, bronze figurines, scarabs and earthenware objects. They originate from Egypt, Italy, India and the Middle East.

Stamp seal, banded brown onyx, possibly Iran, date unknown

The circular stamp seal is of a hemispherical shape and features an incised linear pattern. It also has a pierced suspension hole through the middle.
