Object statement
Amulet, Taweret, light green faience, Egypt, Saite period, 664-525 BCE
In Egyptian mythology Taweret was alternately seen as the demon-wife of Apep, the original god of evil, and as a protective goddess during pregnancy and childbirth. She was depicted as a hippopotamus, and often with a composite of other animal body parts.
This is part of a large collection of antiquities, including Egyptian faience figures, bronze figurines, scarabs and earthenware objects. They originate from Egypt, Italy, India and the Middle East.
