Description
Belt accessory, abstinence plaque, silk/metallic thread, China, 1800-1899.
Orange silk covered padded, shaped rectangular pendant embroidered with blue and cream silk thread worked in [net stitch] and forming all-over basket weave texture, gold metallic thread couched decorative borders. Inscribed, rectangular cream silk central inset panels, inscribed on one face with Chinese script and Manchurian script on reverse. Threaded with orange silk braid which extends at lower end into two ribbons.

Inscribed, black ink Chinese character 'Zhai Jie', meaning - abstinence on one side of pendant & equivalent characters in Manchurian script on the opposite - 'Bolgomi targa'.
