Object statement
Bowl, 'Argenta' ware, glazed stoneware, silver inlay, designed by Wilhelm Kåge, made by Gustavsberg, Värmdö, Sweden, about 1950
The Gustavsberg factory near Stockholm produced superb modernist stoneware when Kåge, a painter and graphic designer, was art director between 1917 and 1949. His 'Argenta' and Cubism-inspired 'Surrea' series were particularly successful. 'Argenta' vessels, which resemble patinated bronze inlayed with silver have long been popular with ceramics collectors.
Wilhelm Kage, Swedish, 1889-1960. Was art director at Gustavsberg between 1917 and 1949. Awarded Paris Grand Prix in 1925.
Acquired in 1956
