Cake basket, sterling silver, pierced geometric design, Burrage Davenport, London, England, 1799
Oval bowl with, curving out almost horizontally to rim edge. Mounted on an oval ring base that spreads slightly to the bottom edge and is soldered to the base of the bowl. the bowl has a plain lower section and the side to the rim edge are pierced with two bands of vertical slits bordered with scallops and divided by a band of lotus. The rim bears a band of fret bordered on the inside by a stamped strip of concave ovals and wiggle work. On the outer rim edge by a soldered band of beading. The swinging, hinged oval handle strap bears a central row of beading.
Marks
A single punch mark each side of both hinges: lion passant / BD / leopard's head crowned / b. Engraved coat of arms within oval in centre bowl: head of man in helmet. Scratched under base: 2/273-24/22012/9927.
