Bowl, lead glazed earthenware / sgraffito decoration, Byzantine Period, Cyprus, 1300-1399
Bowl with a narrow bevelled rim, tapering sides, a pronounced elbow and a flaring / upturned base. The bowl is made of coarse, buff-coloured clay. The exterior is coated with a white slip beneath a yellow glaze. The interior is decorated with a sgraffiato bird design on a field of clear green glaze over a white slip. A border of circles between pairs of parallel lines features beneath the lip. Splashes of yellow and green glaze cover the incised decoration.
