Object statement
Collection of Mediaeval Bowls from Cyprus (81), 6 Bowls with Human Figures, 2 Bowls with Birds, 1 Bowl with Fishes, 46 Bowls with floral or heraldic designs, 26 broken bowls, mostly of less common shape (LC).
It was the custom until recently to place a feeding bowl in the grave when someone was buried
These mediaeval Cypriot bowls probably originate from graves in the Polis region, on Chrysokou Bay in north west Cyprus. They appear to have been amongst a number looted from the graves by a villager and sold to Mr G. Colokasides a local dealer. He in turn sold a number of the pots (A4147) to the late Professor James Stewart to take back to Australia. They appear in turn to have been sold to the MAAS through Professor James Stewart as agent.
