Continuous lace border with scalloped headside.
Design: Simple repeating "daisy"like flower motif along scalloped edge, open leaf motif below separated by decorative circles on a fine lace net. Footside with cotton thread binding.
Technique: Continuous bobbin lace technique. All the motifs in the design are made up of honeycomb rings (Cook & Stott p42) outlined with a gimp thread of silk twist. The centres of the headside flowers are cloth/whole stitch using soft floss silk as the worker pair. The ground is the standard tulle mesh as in Buckingham Point Ground (Cook & Stott p14). The headside is ornamented with picots. The footside carries a single passive pair. The use of a silk twist gimp suggests that this piece was made in the later 19th C, possibly in England, to an 1830s design.
Special features: As with much of this kind of lace, the workmanship is rather haphazard - due, no doubt, to the fineness of the thread.
