Snuffbox, shell shaped, porcelain / silver, made by the St Cloud Porcelain Factory, France, c. 1750
Shell shaped box with silver mount painted in bands of yellow, brown, green and blue enamels, unidentified silver mark. A soft-paste porcelain snuff box modelled in the form of a shell. The deep box is moulded naturistically on the exterior with low relief scrolling and ribbing. The lip is mounted with silver bands, with a hinged cover moulded on the exterior with a low-relief putto in a scrolled and ribbed shell pattern. Dipped in clear, glassy glaze, the underside of the cover has an 'orange-peel' surface and is painted in bright polychrome enamels; on the exterior with yellow, red, green and blue bands. The underside of the cover has Indianische Blumen and insects vigorously pencilled in red with polychromatic enamel colouring.
