Description
Plate, sun motifs and blue willow pattern, earthenware, made by Doulton & Co, Burslem, England, c1880s

An earthenware plate in the Aesthetic Movement style, decorated with sun motifs and a blue willow pattern. A circular foot ring rises to a concave upper face, with a shallow well and a wide border. The plate is decorated in Persian style, with circular gold-edged panels depicting blue sun motifs, gold sun motifs and a blue willow pattern. The panels are set on a cobalt blue border, which is also decorated with sprays of flowers in gold transfer print. The well and rim are edged in gold.

Maker's trademark on base, transfer printed in blue, crown surmounting irregular circle shape, with text 'DOULTON / BURSLEM' encircling central motif of four interlinked 'D's and text ENGLAND / GLENBASIT' beneath. Maker's trademark impressed on base, with the text ' BURSLEM / ENGLAND' encircling the word 'DOULTON'. Maker's number impressed on base '3-02'. Starburst paper label adhered to base, written in black ink 'P/M.'. Maker's number written on base, written in gold '9843'. Torn circular paper label adhered to base, printed in brown, with the number written in black ink 'John Slater / Collection No...5'. Rectangular paper label adhered to base, written in black ink 'B154'.
