Plate, poppies, earthenware, made by Doulton and Co, Burslem, England, 1879-1885.
An off-white earthenware plate, decorated with a large spray of poppies. A circular foot ring rises to a concave upper face, with a shallow well and a wide rim. The plate is decorated with a large spray of poppies in Spanish style, mainly in pink and grey, with gold and white enamel highlights, on a pale pink and yellow background. The rim is edged in gold and gold clouding.
Made: Doulton & Co (Burslem works); ; 1879 - 1885
Marks
Maker's trademark on base, in impressed text, irregular circle shape, with text 'DOULTON / BURSLEM' encircling central motif of four interlinked 'D's. Maker's number on base, in impressed text '68=53'. Maker's marks on base, both written in brown 'HkWE.' and 'No 2 W - JAR'. Artist's monogram on base, written in blue 'JL'. Starburst paper label adhered to back, written in pencil '7 / Spanish / YX/-'. Circular paper label adhered to base, printed in brown, with the number written in black ink 'ROYAL DOULTON / - / John Slater Collection No...530'.
