Jardiniere, foliage and birds, stoneware and metal, made by Doulton & Co, Burslem, England, 1885-1891
A salad bowl, made from wheel-thrown, cream-coloured stoneware and EPNS, with a squat globular body, bearing a decoration of foliage and birds. A flared foot ring rises to a squat, globular body, tapering at the sides to a wide rim, edged on the exterior in a band of EPNS. The body is decorated on the exterior in 'Chine'style, with a fine textured net pattern. The surface has been painted with foliage and flowers in thick black outline, on a cream and clouded gold background. Over the top of the painted decoration has been applied relief flying birds and tree branches, painted black and gold. The interior rim is decorated in clouded gold.
Marks
Maker's trademark on base, transfer printed in brown, crown surmounting irregular circle shape, with text 'DOULTON / BURSLEM' encircling central motif of four interlooping 'D's. Maker's marks and number on base in brown transfer print 'U.S. PATENT / 314,602'. Maker's number on base, written in brown 'B170'. Starburst paper labels adhered to base, one on top of the other, written in pencil and black ink 'PK/-'. Circular paper label adhered to base, printed in brown, with the number handwritten in black ink,'ROYAL DOULTON / - / John Slater Collection No...276'.
