Coffee cup and saucer, porcelain (bone china), circular in shape, made by Doulton & Co, Burslem, England, 1885-1902
Coffee cup, featuring an inset foot, an almost cylindrical body flaring to rim, with a rectangular shaped handle. The exterior surface is decorated with a linear, gilt floral pattern on a dark red ground (Hispano moresque style). Rim, base and handle edged in gilt, with gold lines decorating length of handle. Clouded gold inside rim of cup.
Saucer, circular in shape, with inset base and obliquely set flared rim. Interior surface decorated as exterior of cup. Rim edged in gilt. Exterior surface and base in plain white.

Maker'name on base, impressed text 'DOULTON', beneath, maker's trademark, transfer printed in brown, crown surmounting irregular circle shape, with text 'DOULTON / BURSLEM', encircling central motif of four interlocking 'D's. Rectangular shaped paper label adhered to base, handwritten in black ink, 'B85'.
Coffee cup:
Identification label adhered to base, paper with sunburst edge handwritten text in cursive style in black ink, 'Gilt & Redburne / YX/-', beneath, maker's trademark, transfer printed in brown, part of irregular circle with text 'SLEM', encircling central motif (most of maker's mark is obscured by paper label).
