Vase, blue, white and gold floral design, made by Doulton & Co, Burslem, England, 1885-1891
A vase, made from moulded white earthenware, with a squat, cylindrical body, bearing a decoration of blue, white and gold flowers. A stepped pedestal foot rises to a domed, fluted base, with a squat cylindrical body, tapering at the shoulder to an elongated neck and flared rim. Two scroll handles extend from the shoulder to the rim. The body, neck and shoulder are decorated in an all-over cobalt blue and white floral transfer print, overlaid with a gold transfer print design of large, circular fruit and foliage. The foot and handle are painted cobalt blue and edged in gold. The rim is edged in gold, with gold clouding in the interior.
Marks
Maker's trademark on base, transfer printed in brown, crown surmounting irregular circle shape, with text 'DOULTON / BURSLEM' encircling central motif of four interlooping 'D's. Maker's mark and number on base, inscribed in cobalt blue 'U' and in impressed text '6130'. Starburst paper label adhered to base, written in pencil 'Persian RG / YX/-'. Rectangular paper paper label adhered to base, written in black ink 'B40'.
