Box with lid, irises, earthenware, made by Doulton and Co., Burslem, England, 1895-1914.
A box, made from wheel-thrown earthenware, circular in shape and painted brown and ochre. A concave base rises to a curved wall, forming a circular, squat body, with an instep at the rim to hold the lid. The exterior is painted dark brown and the interior is painted ochre.
A lid, made from wheel-thrown earthenware, circular in shape and bearing a decoration of irises. A circular wall rises to a concave top. The top of the lid is decorated with irises in dark brown, green and yellow on a dark green background. The wall of the lid is decorated with a band of curved waves, in raised, dark brown enamel. The interior is decorated with flowers painted in brown, green, yellow and pink on an ochre background.
Marks
Maker's trademark on base, transfer printed in brown, crown surmounting irregular circle shape, featuring text 'DOULTON / BURSLEM' encircling central scroll and text 'HOLBEIN WARE', with text 'ENGLAND' beneath. Maker's mark on base, in impressed text, 'DOULTON'. Rectangular paper label adhered to base, written in black ink 'B74'.
