John Slater Collection of Doulton Ware, manufactured at the Nile Street, Burslem Works, Staffordshire, England, from 1877 to 1918, presented by John and Arthur Shorter of Sydney, 1932 (SB).
John Slater was the Art Director at Doulton, Nile St Works, Burslem, Staffordshire. He was the author of 3 patents: 1. use of fine lace for the forming of patterns on pottery 2. use of photgraphy on pottery 3. development of a lead glaze which was useful in soldering pipes
Bought by John Shorter (Snr) & Arthur Shorter from Doultons Nile Street Works, Burslem, in 1919 and brought to Australia. They represented a collection put together by John Slater (art director) from the early days at the Pinder, Bourne & Co factory. In Sydney approx 1/2 of the collection was sold & the remaining was put on display at Shorter House 193 Clarence St in a purpose built 'Honduras Mahogany' case. Donated to MAAS together with the showcase in 1932.
