This covered box was made by the Toba Batak people of Sumatra, Indonesia.
This covered box was made 1900-1920.
This covered box was used by the Batak people for storing textiles. In many parts of Indonesia, heirloom textiles, along with other treasured objects, are stored in special containers in the upper section of houses. Allied with the realm of spirits, the addition or removal of objects from the area is often accompanied by ritual.
