Border lace with straight picoted headside
PATTERN:
A repeating design of curving floral sprays which almost fill the mesh ground. Regularly arranged spots and a row of small trefoil shapes form the secondary decoration. The headside border band makes a regular tooth-shaped intrusion into the mesh ground.
STITCHES/TECHNIQUES:
The solid areas of the design are worked in what appears to be a constant worker cloth stitch. This is outlined and delineated with a gimp thread which is integrated into the cloth work rather than spaced off by twists. There are also small trefoil motifs with a gimp outline.
The filling stitches are honeycomb (Cook and Stott p42) and trefoil leaves formed by twisted half-stitch ground stitches, similar to those in the honeycomb. There is a standard half-stitch tulle mesh ground, worked with a half stitch and two twists at each pin, decorated with square tallies (Cook and Stott pXVI figure 20) as is typical of Lille lace.
