Mechlin lace border, Flanders, c. 1800 (OF).
Border with straight headside and picots
Design: tiny floral sprigs near the headside, and regular placing of dots elsewhere, all in a mesh ground. Pattern repeat: 1.4 cm.
Technique: The solid areas, although very small are all worked in cloth stitch outlined with a gimp. The dots appear to be worked as toile stars. The mesh ground is plaited four times and twisted twice.
