Object statement
Textile length, painted cotton, maker unknown, Gujarat, India, 1700-1800
Loosely woven cotton ground; two panels joined at the selvages; surface painting depicting flowers, trees and dense foliage in predominant deep red, outlines drawn in black; blue, yellow and green added. Square format, centrefield framed by border 32 cm wide; central circular floral pattern.
This textile was collected in Tanah Toraja and was probably used by the Toraja people as a mawa, or ceremonial textile.
Origin uncertain, but textile looks similar to a palampore illustrated in Irwin (1971, plate 21), from Madras state.
