There is an identical print of this photograph in the State Library of New South Wales small picture file. It is identified as from the studio of Boake and dated 1881. Barcroft Carpel Boake, who had a studio at 330 George Street, Sydney, photographed Sydney society between 1866 and 1886).
Hand colouring of photographs was standard practice in late 19th and early 20th century studio photography. It was a task usually carried out by young girls employed by the studio to retouch negatives and prints. An additional fee was generally charged for hand colouring.

A black and white hand coloured photograph in portrait format, mounted within a gold coloured, oval shaped mount. The photograph shows a seated woman (Mme Juliette Henry, wife of Lucien Henry), dressed in a black dress with white lace collar and cuffs. She is pictured resting her head on her right hand. Details of her face, dress and jewellery are hand coloured. The mounted photograph has been removed from its gilded wooden frame. An envelope containing three press clippings was found at the rear of the frame.
