Object statement
Model of prefabricated cast iron Coining Factory girder from Sydney Mint, plastic, Iain Scott-Stevenson / Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Australia, 1995
Model designed by Iain Scott-Stevenson on original girder design of John Walker of London. This is a model of some of the components that were erected at the docks in London to the satisfaction of the Royal Mint before being transported to Sydney.
Iain Scott-Stevenson, Powerhouse Museum modelmaker. Iain was trained in Interior and Industrial Design at the National Art School, the old East Sydney Technical College. In Iain's own words:
"In 1972 I set off on the 'Big Trip', signed on a cargo ship and worked my passage to England where I spent the next seven years working for Thorp Modelmakers Ltd in London; a very exciting time as OPEC had raised the price of oil so the whole of the Middle East was awash with money, and the Arab nations went on a massive building spree so there was a great deal of interesting modelmaking work. Arrived back in Australia in 1977 and worked for Arcmod, at the time probably the number one firm in Sydney but a rude shock after working in London. Joined the Powerhouse Museum in 1981."
1995
Displayed in the Sydney Mint Museum Coining Factory to illustrate the principal components of the prefabricated girder system.
