Object statement
Masks (3), used at Luna Park, plastic/ metal/ elastic, Hong Kong, 1981-1988
Sticker on reverse of one of the marks indicates the mask was made in Hong Kong.

The masks were used dureing this period of operation of Luna Park
The donor remembers the masks being used as a ticketing device when he attended Luna Park. As he entered wearing the mask, an attendant made a squiggly mark over the letters RAT, to indicate that the donor had paid for his entry.

According to Sam Marshall, author of 'Luna Park: Just for Fun', the masks were used at Luna Park from 1981 to 1988, when the park was run by Col Goldstein/Harbourside Amusements. The masks were not normally used for ticketing. He suggests that the masks were used in this way at a special event, probably a RAT (Recreational Arts Team) party at Luna Park. (Sam Marshall in a phone discussion with Peter Cox, 13/8/99). This would explain the date and time and the letters 'RAT' appearing on the stickers.

Description
Masks (3), used at Luna Park, plastic/ metal/ elastic, Hong Kong, 1981-1988
Three moulded plastic face masks bearing the image of the 'face' or gateway to Sydney's Luna Park. The masks are white, with the two side towers of the Luna Park gateway in blue and yellow, and a strip of red along the crown of the face. Eyebrows, eyes and lower lips are black, upper lips are red. There are holes for the eyes, mouth and nostrils. Each mask has a piece of elastic stapled to its sides to allow it to be worn. Each mask bears a sticker on the front, 'LunRATic', proof of entry to a RAT (Recreational Arts Team) party held at Luna Park.
