Object statement
Handtowels (2), cotton, China, 1970-89
Towels such as this were used as head scarves and were tied around the head by peasant or labouring peoples. The towel/scark had a dual purpose and could be removed easily and used to mop sweat from the face and neck.
These towels were made in China.

These towels were made 1970-1980s.
These hand towels were collected by the vendor in China in 1996 on behalf of the museum.

Description
Handtowels (2), cotton, China, 1970-1989.

Plain white cotton terry towelling hand towel with unhemmed ends.

Rectangular hand towel of white cotton printed with a lotus flower, leaping carp and Chinese 'fu'character, meaning wealth, in reds, pink, orange, black and green. One end is printed with a narcissus flower and Chinese text 'Bai hua', White Flower 888 and 'Jixiang jinmao'or Lucky towel. Ends machine hemmed.
