While our digitisation project is well underway with 80% of collection objects currently listed online, there is much more work to be done. Your donation will assist the Powerhouse to add high quality photographs and full background information for the 50% of online objects with incomplete listings.
Started in 1879, the collection captures the ideas and technologies that have changed our world and the stories of the people who created them. As well as adding objects of significance to the collection, the Museum has the enormous task of maintaining and conserving the objects under its care.
Jeffrey Smart was born in 1921 in Adelaide. He travelled to Europe in 1948 where he studied under Fernand Leger and in 1963 he left Australia permanently to live in Arezzo, Italy and has worked, exhibited and lived there ever since. Since 1955 he has exhibited frequently in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and occasionally in London. He is represented in all the state and national galleries and in many international public and private collections. The relationship between buildings and other man-made structures and people has been the focus of his art for over 40 years. The crispness of the acquired design, derived in the main from the large red-rimmed star to the left of the work, conveys the clarity and meticulousness of his painting style.
Made by Jeffrey Smart in [Italy] and sent to Sydney for display in 'Flagging the Republic' exhibition held at the Sherman Galleries in Paddington in 1996
The artwork was produced specifically for the exhibition 'Flagging the Republic' held at the Sherman Galleries, Paddington, Sydney in February 1996
