Object statement
Diary and thesis, brewing, paper / fabric, Carl Resch, Australia / England, 1934-1946
Carl Emil Resch (1907-1989) was the last member of his family to work in the brewing industry.
Carl was the son of Emil Resch, youngest of three German-born brothers. While Edmund and Richard Resch made their mark in the NSW brewing industry, Emil's main achievement was to manage Melbourne's Victoria Brewery from 1899 before becoming the first general manager of Carlton and United Breweries when this conglomerate of six breweries was formed in 1906. Although he was successful in uniting the former competitors into the dominant force in Victorian brewing, Emil was dismissed in 1914, along with all other CUB employees of German background. In Sydney, Edmund Resch Sr was interned at Holsworthy as an 'enemy alien'. Both had been Australian citizens for decades.
Carl Resch studied at Melbourne University before taking his PhD at the University of Birmingham. On his return to Australia in 1936, Carl became head brewer at Ballarat Brewery. He joined the RAAF during the 1939-45 war, and from 1945 until his retirement in 1972 was head brewer and production manager at CUB, overseeing the introduction of steel casks and canned beer.
