-1 Diary of 328 lined pages with cloth cover and alpabetical index pages. Endpapers are marbled. Inside front cover is circular sticker 'Norman Brothers Melbourne Stationers Pty Ltd'. First 40pp are handwritten in ink with brewing procedures (including quantities, temperatures, times) for a variety of beers, including Foster's and Resch's lagers, German Lager, Rice beer, Empire Ale, Bitter Ale, Old Vic Ale and the Carlton range of products. Also included are notes on various aspects of brewing including malting, worts, fermentation, carbonation, filtration etc. Some entries are dated, the range extending from 1934 to 1946.
-2 Doctoral thesis typewritten in quarto size cloth spring back cover. Title page reads: 'Thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor by Carl Emil Resch from The Department of Industrial Fermentation May, 1936.' The thesis title is 'Studies on the cell wall substances of plants with special reference to the pectic substances of the flower of the hop (humulus lupulus)'. The thesis occupies 150 pages plus references.
