paper label adhered under plate l.c. "19-32. - Here are represented the motifs of decorative painting which / one meets every-where in the ornamentation of public and / private buildings, upon the ceilings, columns, walls, boxes, / looking-glasses and other domestic objects. We have only / found room in these plates (19-32) for those ornaments, which / distinguish themselves from others by the originality of their design or of their colours. Bokhara is so rich in ornaments / that, after years devoted to these researches, on could not / bring forward all the designs from this inexhaustible source. / At first the designer astonishes you by the facility with which / he draws from the same design dozens of new models, with out / varying the colours at all. He is indefatigable in his work, / and you marvel at the simple and practical manner in which / he executes the most complicated geometic forms. There is / nothing suprising in this: almost an Italian by temperament, / he takes to himself like an Italian, the experience of thousands / of years."
