Tony Palmer, TIAS valuer, has suggested that this type of chair was commonly imported from North America between 1900 and 1914.
Anne Fairbairn believes that this chair was a particular favourite of Sir George's and he used it specially after his car accident in 1911.
This chair has remained in the Reid family since Sir George's death in 1918.

Description
Office chair (in 2 parts), belonging to Sir George Reid, wood/wicker/metal, [United States, 1900-1914]
Wooden swivel office chair, with woven wicker seat and upper back. The lower back consists of 9 turned spindles and two curved arm rests. The chair rests on a metal strut and central vertical axle. The axle sits inside a hole within the wooden, four legged base, thus allowing the chair to swivel. The chair can be removed from the chair base as the appropriate locking screw mechanism has rusted.
