97/232/3 Figure, 'Sir George Reid', cast iron/paint, Australia, 1880-1918
Images: 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08

Perhaps more than any other Australian politician, Reid was a popular subject for figurines of this type. Some were painted, some plain metal and at least one bronze figurine is known. It is unclear whether they were intended as paper weights or door stops or simple ornaments. However, castings such as these were clearly designed as caricatures, affectionate or otherwise, of Reid's physical appearance.
This figurine has remained in the Reid family since the death of Sir George in 1918. According to his grand daughter Anne Fairbairn, this piece was owned by either Sir George or Lady Reid.

Description
Figure, 'Sir George Reid', cast iron/paint, Australia, 1880-1918
Small, simply cast, caricatured figure of Sir George Reid. It shows a portly, moustached Reid with one hand in his pocket and the other by his side. He is shown wearing tails: black jacket, grey trousers and a white shirt with black buttons and tie. The figure is crudely painted, in particular the facial features. The figure stands on a square plinth that was probably initially painted black. Most of the paint from the plinth and atop Reid's head has worn away. The shirt and face were originally painted a white or cream which has since yellowed.
