According to Anne Fairbairn, Reid's grand daughter, this box housed a draft copy of the Australian constitution in the late 1890s.
This document box has remained in the Reid family since the death of Sir George in 1918.

Document box (in 2 parts), belonging to Sir George Reid, metal, [London, England, 1890-1918]

Metal document box with a hinged lid typically used to hold important documents. The box has been painted black, and is in two parts, firstly the lid and back panel which remains attached by one hinge, and secondly the base which is missing a side panel (Note: The donor has undertaken to find the missing side.)
