96/381/1 Violin, part of Alma V quartet, timber / plastic / steel, Graham Caldersmith, Canberra, Australia, 1977-1980
Description
Violin from Alma V quartet. Consisting of belly (front or top plate) made from King William pine, back and sides of Queensland walnut, and neck and tailpiece of brigalow. The belly is flat rather than arched, and the treble foot of the bridge rests not on the belly but on a curved soundpost attached to the inner rib. The head terminates in a sickle rather scroll shape. Also featured are soundholes in a lyre shape rather than "f" holes. There are four steel strings. The belly has internal fan strutting as well as the standard bass bar to provide internal support. Inlaid parallel lines decorate the centre back of the fingerboard. Additional inlay decorates the outer edge of the belly (top plate) and back plate. Stored in 96/381/2-2 with object 96/381/2-1 upon receipt. Accompanied by small, metal accessory.
